The Headstart Programme

  • Starting Junior Infants is an important milestone for a young child, in Scoil Mhuire Ballyhogue, we are committed to making this transition a positive experience. The Headstart Programme is a transition programme for parents/guardians and their children who are starting to attend Primary School.
  • Wexford Local Development provide a ‘Starting Big School’ booklet which is distributed to schools for use with incoming Junior Infant children and their parents. Many of the activities suggested by the pack can be done at home such as shared reading, drawing, painting, using child friendly scissors and jigsaws but most importantly making time for play and talking with your child.
  • The aims of the programme are three fold:
    1. To give incoming Junior Infant children equal educational opportunities through the use of early learning with their parents/guardians.
    2. To provide an opportunity for children to improve their fine motor skills, concentration levels and to enjoy art activities.
    3. To encourage parents/guardians to enjoy shared reading time with their children.

 

Mó Scéal

  • Moving to primary school is an important part of every child’s life and there is a lot that we can do to support them and their families with this part of growing up.
  • We would use the Mo Scéal transition template when the school requires additional information about your child.
  • The Mo Scéal‘  template facilitates the sharing of information on children’s learning and development between preschools, parents/guardians and, us at Scoil Mhuire Ballyhogue.
  • Mo Scéal means ‘My Story’ and the reporting template helps to tell the story of the child’s interests, strengths and challenges prior to starting here in junior infants.
  •  Mo Scéal is included in the Government’s Let’s Get Ready Campaign which supports children transitioning into and out of preschool, providing children/families with a little gift bag of books from your local library.

 

 

Children enrolled in our school are invited to visit with their parents for two sessions in June, to see their new school and meet their new teacher. This is a lovely time to explore and get used to the new surroundings, their classroom and their classmates in a relaxed atmosphere.
